Diversity Deep Dive- May 2020 by June DePonte Sernak

The month of May marks both Military Appreciation Month and National Mental Health Month. These days of appreciation and awareness are overshadowed by the worldwide conditions impacting us during the current times of crisis. The impacts on diversity, equity and inclusion during uncertainty are exacerbated for vulnerable and marginalized populations including those suffering from mental illness and our veteran’s. Intergenerational trauma is a trigger for many when faced with circumstances beyond our control. As we remain vigilante with physical distancing, it is important to have an equity minded focus for our employees, customers and community.

Creating a healthy safe environment for vulnerable populations is a priority for your business to be an ally to your customers and the community. Senior citizens, veterans and people of color have been statically impacted at higher rates than other populations and now is an opportunity to provide guidelines to ensure they are cautious and safe. Several essential retailers have opened specific hours to meet the needs of these high risk audiences while the use of virtual technology has given others the flexibility to meet remotely and stay connected with our teams and clients.

Here are a few guidelines to ensure a positive mental health and safe practices during these uncertain times:

· Provide hours of operation and contact information on email signatures, social media and websites letting clients know how to reach you remotely.

· Consume news and content mindfully and channel emotions into creative outlets.

· Reach out to friends, family and clients to share experiences and stories to maintain physical distancing not social distancing.

· Navigate technology to avoid virtual hate. Avoid online confrontations on social media and beware of scams or tactics such as Zoombombing that perpetuate implicit bias and stereotypes.

· Create short term goals in 30 day, 60 day, 90 day increments to celebrate small wins and achievements. Taking time to strategically plan is a great use of time.

· Use journaling to document how you are feeling and take time to relax

As we consider reopening, determine which guiding principles you will adopt to remain equity minded. Identify the leadership communication that will benefit your staff and clients to continue a model of equality and inclusion.
