Diversity Deep Dive- January 2020 by June DePonte Sernak
The New Year is a perfect time for reflection. While many take this time to make resolutions that are usually not easy to achieve and often forgotten in the first month, this is a time to make making full inspirations that include reflection and volunteering in diverse areas that open the door to new experiences. Volunteering in a diverse community allows for you, family, friends and employees to come together and understand needs of those that may be very different from your cultural norms.
Volunteering is a great way to add skills to your resume or Linked In profile by adding tasks and experiences that can highlight your current occupation or add to your future goals. There are many non profits that experience tremendous needs throughout the year and can benefit from your professional experience to help them serve the community as well as achieve their goals while giving back to those that truly need a help up instead of a handout.
The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 20, 2020, marks the 25th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy. Observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
This is a great opportunity to share in the MLK Day of service and encourage your staff to join you in a team building event while giving back.
